Frequently Asked Questions

Who is His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin?

His Holiness Gyana Vajra Rinpoche is the current head of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. He belongs to the noble Khön family, a lineage of unbroken emanations of Buddha Vajradhara. He is the son of His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin.

What is an Initiation or"Empowerment" (Wang)?

An initiation or empowerment is a sacred ceremony where a qualified Guru "awakens" a specific spiritual potential within the student, granting permission to engage in a particular practice.

Do I need to be a Buddhist to attend?

Whilst these are Buddhist initiations, anyone with a sincere heart from any tradition is welcome to attend. However, it is strongly advised to have formally taken Refuge prior to the event.

Why only Lotus Family initiations?

Compassion is the very life of the Lotus family and the heart of Buddhist practice. Ultimate compassion dawns as the five wisdoms—a genuine love that serves as a tree of happiness and the path to Buddhahood.

What is Refuge?

Refuge is the formal starting point of the spiritual path. It is the act of turning away from unreliable or "worldly" sources of happiness and placing one’s trust in the Three Jewels (the Triple Gem): the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

Is there a booklet available to practice the daily sadhana?

That depends on your circumstances. If you lead a busy life, you may recite the mantra only whilst meditating to keep the stream of blessings intact. You shall eventually find more freedom, at which point you can dedicate yourself fully to longer sessions. An extensive practice booklet will be provided during the Victorian School Term 2.

Apart from the initiations, will there be any teachings?

Whilst the Guru is in the area, students do not teach, in accordance with the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva. Consequently, for those interested, Hezr will be giving teachings during the Victorian School Term 2. Again, this will require you to keep the stream of your practice running.

What should I bring with me?

• A Khata: A white ceremonial scarf to offer to His Holiness during the blessing.

• Cushion/Mat: Whilst seating is provided, you may wish to bring a small cushion for extra comfort.

• Note-taking materials: To record specific instructions or wisdom shared during the teachings.

Is there a dress code?

We ask that all attendees dress modestly out of respect for the sacred space and the Guru; this entails covering the shoulders and knees. Many practitioners choose to wear light-coloured or white clothing, though this is not mandatory.

What is the significance of the "Fire Horse" year?

The Fire Horse is a year of immense energy and momentum. It is considered an auspicious time for "swift path" practices—moving quickly to overcome obstacles and attaining the set of five wisdoms. This makes it an ideal time for these specific empowerments.

How should I behave when meeting His Holiness?

It is customary to stand when His Holiness enters or leaves the room. If you are comfortable doing so, three prostrations are performed as a sign of respect for the Dharma. When approaching His Holiness, a slight bow is appropriate.

What is a private audience?

A private audience is an opportunity to clear obstacles and receive close, personal blessings from the Guru. When attending a private audience, it is traditional to offer a khata, along with an envelope containing a donation towards His Holiness’s youth projects. We can supply a special envelope to honour your generosity. Remember to write your name on the envelope so that the blessings go into the sphere of one’s merit field.

To schedule of private audience, please contact Pauline Gallagher +61417219594
